Misconceptions part 2: “3D printing has visible lines, rough surface.”

This image was held by many people regarding the technology.

To be fair—with older processes like FDM—it was true. One could see the layer lines and feel the ridges.

But here was the reality: With Multi Jet Fusion (MJF), smooth, isotropic, professional-quality surfaces were obtained straight off the printer.

  • No obvious lines
  • A consistent finish
  • Ready for use in the real world—from prototypes to end-use parts

If layer lines were still pictured when hearing “3D printing,” it was because MJF parts had yet to be seen.

So the question wasn’t “Is it going to look rough?”. The question was “How will you take advantage of high-quality, production-grade parts when you can get them this fast?”
